Fruit trees provide some of the most spectacular springtime flowering exhibitions in the world. There are hundreds of different fruit trees to choose from. Some of the fruits you should plant in zone 5 are –
- Apples – The Apple varieties that will grow well in zone 5 are crimson gala, Cortland, duchess of Oldenburg and freedom. Apple trees require full sun and well drained soil to grow well. Apples should be planted in areas with good circulation.
- Black Currant – It reaches up to 4 feet in both spread as well as height. Black Currant prefers rich and well-drained soil as well as full sun or partly shaded position. These are often used as ornamental hedges as they feature green-yellow flowers that bloom in April.
- Apricots - Apricots are hardy fruits, which can tolerant temperatures as low as -20 degrees in zone 5. It should be planted in the shaded region in spring. Apricot trees can grow as tall as 20 to 30 feet and in ideal conditions they have a lifespan of 75 years.
- Wild Pear – The Wild Pear can grow as tall as 30 feet and around 20 feet wide. It requires humus enriched, well drained soil in full sun positions. It consists of dark green leaves which turn red and yellow in autumn. In zone 5 it is usually planted for obtaining fruits.
- Bing cherry – This is one of the finest commercial sweet cherries. It is widely adaptable to any soil type but requires full sun. The bloom period for this is early April and it will yield inn 3-5 years.
- Peach - Early Elberta CVI and Redhaven CVI are the varieties of peach suitable for zone 5. Early Elberta CVI is a large yellow peach whereas Redhaven CVI is a red fruit with yellow undertones. It is a heavy producer that needs thinning.
- Plum – Burbank CVI is the variety of plum which is suitable for zone 5. It is a reddish purple fruit with and has deep yellow flesh with good flavor. These require full sun with a moderately fertile and well drained soil. Bearing begins in 2-3 years.
- Blueberries – These are one of the easiest trees to grow and are very well suited for beginners. The plant height should be kept at 4-6 feet for plucking the fruits easily. It requires full sun and well-drained compost-enriched soil.
