A walled garden, as the name suggests is a garden enclosed by high walls. This is done for horticultural purposes rather than security. Garden walls also serve the purpose of decoration, but their main function in zone 5 is to protect the garden from frost as well as from wind. However, if there is a small space available for gardening, then you can opt for small walled garden. Even if you have a small space, you can create an enclosed garden which can be made colorful by mixing varieties of flowers, shrubs and other attractive plants.
You should not forget that you have a small space and thus make sure that you balance up the entire combination of colors, textures, widths and heights.
Perennial Garden - Small walled garden is an ideal place to grow perennials. There are a large number of perennial blooms which provide a long-lasting addition to the space as well as great attraction. Also, plant a perennial tree like Japanese maple inside your walled garden. This will provide shade for some plants as well as create a fantastic design. Also, go for some bright and cheerful perennials like blanket flower, daylilies etc. Plant some creeping vines around the garden wall which will add vibrancy to your garden.
Edible Garden – This is a very exciting concept of creating an edible garden within the walled space. Plant some vegetables like cucumbers, beans and cabbage which will add color to the garden as well as provide food. Plant cherry tomatoes to drip over the edges of the wall. Go for some herbs like mint, sage etc. inside the garden space, which will consume little space. One can also go with herbs like basil and cilantro that can be grown in containers and thus, will leave some space for others.
Ornamental Garden – This refers to growing ornamentals in the garden space. Ornamentals should be planted along the edges of the garden which will give a light feel to the space. Go for Red Baron which looks stunning with its bright red tips on green foliage. This will work well along the borders or in the corner. Hair grass is yet another ornamental grass to grow along the small walled space.
Also, grow protective shrubs during the garden’s early development, to provide the requisite cover from winter winds. Also, go for some conifers that will provide your walled garden with some vertical structure and variation in winters.
